Detail blogu img

The European Union adopted a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) in 2024, which is gradually coming into effect. What key changes does it bring, and what should companies prepare for?

Main Goals of the AI Act

The AI Act aims to:

  • Ensure the safety and ethical use of AI systems
  • Protect the fundamental rights of EU citizens
  • Promote innovation and competitiveness of the EU in the AI field

Categorization of AI Systems by Risk

The law divides AI systems into four categories:

1. Unacceptable Risk: These systems are completely banned (e.g., social scoring)
2. High Risk: Subject to strict requirements (e.g., AI in healthcare)
3. Limited Risk: Require transparency (e.g., chatbots)
4. Minimal Risk: No specific obligations

Key Dates and Obligations

  • February 2, 2025: Ban on AI systems with unacceptable risk and obligation to ensure AI literacy for employees
  • August 2, 2025: Obligations for providers of general AI models
  • August 2, 2026: Full effectiveness of most provisions of the AI Act
Penalties for Violations

Fines can reach up to:

  • 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover for the most serious violations
  • 15 million euros or 3% of turnover for less serious violations

What Should Companies Do?

  1. Inventory the AI systems in use
  2. Assess their risk according to the AI Act
  3. Implement required control mechanisms
  4. Ensure AI literacy for relevant employees
  5. Prepare for obligations related to high-risk AI systems

The AI Act represents a significant change in AI regulation. Companies should start preparing as soon as possible to meet all requirements in time.
